The coalition of Civil Society Groups in Katsina, under the auspices of Katsina Concerned Citizens for Good Governance (KCCGG), expressed deep concern over recent incidents involving foreign nationals threatening the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
Chairman of the group, Comrade Yakubu Muhammed, in a statement on Friday, said the most painful aspects are the incidents involving individuals who have been arrested for actions potentially harmful to Nigeria and those who have displayed disrespect by raising foreign flags, notably the Russian flag, while desecrating the Nigerian flag.
According to the statement, these actions are a direct affront to the peace, security, and values of Nigeria, highlighting the need for a decisive response to uphold national dignity and sovereignty.
"Consequently, KCCGG calls on the Federal Government to: Investigate all foreign nationals arrested in connection with these activities, and if found wanting, be prosecuted in competent courts of jurisdiction to demonstrate Nigeria’s zero-tolerance policy for any form of disrespect or threat to its national sovereignty.
“Review and enhance the existing security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Monitor the activities of foreign nationals and their governments as well as improve security around sensitive national symbols and infrastructure,” the statement further said.
It said the Federal Government should engage in enlightenment campaigns aimed at educating both citizens and foreigners about the importance of respecting Nigeria’s sovereignty.
"Also, engage diplomatic missions in Nigeria and ensure they comprehend the seriousness of these actions to prevent future occurrences.
“KCCGG acknowledged that there is economic hardship in the country. We urge the federal and state governments to revisit economic policies and provide relief to the teeming masses. However, the persistent foreign interference undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty represents a grave challenge that threatens the nation’s security,” it said.
It said, “the concerns voiced by KCCGG underscore the urgent need for a response from the Federal Government, as foreign entities continue to manipulate Nigeria’s political landscape for their own selfish interests.”
